Luke watched, mesmerized, as a reversal of the previous magic happened again. First,

the wings shrank down and disappeared entirely from view, presumably into Cain’s back.

Then, as his body started to shift back to its less bulky shape, the copper color of his skin

almost seemed to swirl in iridescence over the surface of his body, until only olive-colored

flesh remained. Too late, Luke realized the claws were already gone, and he had missed that,

but he stared, transfixed, as the demon’s harshly sculpted face receded and reshaped itself

until his Cain stood before him once again.

As Cain got dressed, Luke realized that as much as that flying beast was a magnificent

part of his fantasies, this being that stood before him now was the one that he cared about.

This was the being whose fears Luke wished, with every fiber of his being, he could chase

away. This was the being that had to learn to trust him, else all was lost.

“Talk to me, Hawk,” Luke said, once Cain was fully clothed. “Who was that man who

came to see you today? Who is he, and what could he possibly hold over you that allows him

to dictate your life to such a terrible degree?”

“He is the Traveler,” Cain told Luke, his voice so low that Luke had to move closer in

order to hear him. “He keeps tabs on the Naverto who choose to leave the clan. That is what

I am, specifically.” To Luke, it sounded like sharing these words was the hardest thing Cain

had ever done in his life. “I am a Naverto demon.”

“Okay.” Luke still wasn’t sure about the look in Cain’s eyes, and whereas before it had

filled him with anger, that initial feeling changed and slid down his spine with the icy

fingers of fear now. He forced himself to continue. “If he was just checking in on you, then

why did his presence provoke such a strong reaction?”

“He wasn’t just checking in on me,” Cain said, his voice once again under control and

steady. His eyes couldn’t lie, though, and they were still wide and bleak. “He is special, and I

didn’t lie to you before. He does have the ability to sense changes in my emotions and sexual

activity from wherever he is in the world. He can sense my aura. He can feel the shifts in

my…my…well, energy, for a lack of a better word. He probably began sensing a small

change when you started working for me, but it wasn’t enough to garner his full attention.

He is only one person doing this job, and there are many who choose to leave the clan. Some

for a short time, and some, like me, who renounce and leave forever. When you and I had

sex that first time, I knew that his visit would only be in a matter of time. Then we started to

become closer” -- Cain’s cheeks reddened -- “in other ways, and I knew the changes in me

were something that he would not be able to ignore. I tried to prepare myself to accept it like

a man, but when I saw him today, I panicked.
